Understanding IVF: What You Need to Know

Learn about In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) — how it works, what to expect, and how it can help you on your journey to parenthood.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most well-known and effective fertility treatments available today. Whether you’re just starting to explore your options or have been on this journey for a while, understanding the IVF process can help you feel more confident and prepared.

What is IVF?

IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) where eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the uterus, where it can implant and develop into a pregnancy.

Who Can Benefit from IVF?

IVF may be recommended for couples or individuals experiencing:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Endometriosis
  • Male factor infertility (low sperm count or motility)
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Age-related fertility decline

The IVF Process

  1. Ovarian stimulation — Medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs
  2. Egg retrieval — Eggs are collected through a minor procedure under sedation
  3. Fertilisation — Eggs are combined with sperm in the lab
  4. Embryo development — Embryos are monitored for 3–5 days
  5. Embryo transfer — One or more healthy embryos are placed into the uterus
  6. Pregnancy test — A blood test is done approximately two weeks after transfer
