Understanding IUI: What You Need to Know

Learn about Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) — how it works, what to expect, and how it can help you on your journey to parenthood.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a widely used fertility treatment that offers a less invasive approach compared to more advanced procedures like IVF. If you’re exploring fertility options, understanding how IUI works can help you make informed decisions about your care.

What is IUI?

IUI, also known as artificial insemination, is a fertility treatment where specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This gives the sperm a head start by bypassing the cervix and placing it closer to the fallopian tubes, where fertilisation occurs.

Who Can Benefit from IUI?

IUI may be recommended for couples or individuals experiencing:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • Mild male factor infertility (slightly low sperm count or motility)
  • Cervical factor infertility
  • Ovulation disorders (when used with ovulation-inducing medications)
  • Ejaculation or erection difficulties

The IUI Process

  1. Ovulation monitoring — Your cycle is monitored using ultrasound and/or blood tests to determine the optimal time for insemination
  2. Ovulation induction (if needed) — Medications may be used to stimulate ovulation and improve timing
  3. Sperm preparation — A semen sample is collected and processed in the laboratory to concentrate the healthiest sperm
  4. Insemination — The prepared sperm is inserted directly into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter (a quick and usually painless procedure)
  5. Rest and recovery — You can resume normal activities almost immediately after the procedure
  6. Pregnancy test — A blood test is done approximately two weeks after insemination

IUI vs IVF: What’s the Difference?

While both IUI and IVF are fertility treatments, they differ significantly:

  • IUI is less invasive, takes place in the natural reproductive environment, and is typically less expensive. Fertilisation occurs naturally inside the body.
  • IVF involves retrieving eggs and fertilising them in a laboratory before transferring embryos to the uterus. It’s more complex but may have higher success rates for certain conditions.

Your fertility specialist will help determine which treatment is most appropriate for your situation.
